FIRST DAY: FIELDWORK WORKSHOP
This is a one-day fieldwork experience in a few neighborhoods of Beijing. With the ethnographic skills and experienced researchers, you will set the day's exploratory objectives, then depart in groups of three or four, with an ethnographer, to ride public transit, visit shops and markets, and to see some of the real Beijing.
- Place to go: Local hangouts such as Beijing residential neighborhoods, wet markets, places of public commerce, public transportation and recreation. You may also visit Beijing apartment complexes: it's up to your group.
- Things to do: Attend a pre-trip briefing session, go out to the field and observe and participate in the local context. Take fieldnotes and photographs to document your observations and conversations, and post them on the conference blog.
- Quotas: 15 participants maximum. The participants will split into small groups for day-long fieldwork.
- Debrief and sharing: We share our data with the rest of the team by the end of the day.
- What to wear: Comfortable clothing with pockets. A hat and coat may be required in Beijing's changeable weather.
